Northwest Side Area Comprehensive Plan Passes Committee

A comprehensive plan designed to help guide planning and development on Milwaukee's Northwest side was passed by a key Common Council committee Tuesday. The Zoning, Neighborhoods and Development Committee voted 5-0 to recommend approval of the plan, which will go to the full Council for final adoption on Tuesday, February 5.The Northwest Side plan is one of nine neighborhood plans covering the city of Milwaukee. Under the leadership of Ald.D’Amato and Mayor Barrett, this neighborhood approach to city planning was adopted in 2005. Together, the nine plans will comprise Milwaukee’s comprehensive plan as required by the state’s Smart Growth initiative and due in 2010.Other partners who have helped in the planning process include Agape Community Center, Alexian Brothers, Christian Faith Fellowship Church, Direct Supply, Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Wisconsin, Historic Granville Corp., Havenwoods BID, Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee, Northwest Side CDC, and the YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee.The purpose of the Northwest Side Area Comprehensive Plan is to evaluate the assets and opportunities of the area in order to guide new development that builds upon its resources. The plan will do so in a context that responds to the area’s history, natural areas, and cultural resources, encompassing community-planning work that has previously been done as well as planning efforts currently underway.
