Connecting the Corridor - kickoff meeting recap

The City of Milwaukee's "Connecting the Corridor" planning effort was launched with a public meeting in April.  We learned about safety improvements for N 35th Street and engaged on ideas for other ways to improve mobility and safety.The City's Department of Public Works is looking at two distinct phases of change for N 35th Street.  First, the existing roadway from Congress to Townsend will be re-striped to reconfigure traffic lanes in order to reduce speeds and improve safety.  Similar to recent projects on Atkinson Ave and S 2nd St, N 35th Street could be changed from 4 lanes to either 2 or 3 lanes.  The change will be made by changing the paint for lane striping on the street, likely in 2020.A later phase will potentially include much more dramatic changes.  Future work on storm sewers related to a Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District project (the future MMSD West Basin near 35th and Congress) will involve tearing up a large part of 35th Street, especially from Capitol to Congress.  This will allow the opportunity to completely rebuild this section of 35th Street.  DPW is considering larger changes that could involve narrowing the roadway, adding more green space, improving crosswalks, and other possible changes.  This later phase will be launched with MMSD work on the stormwater project.  The precise timeline is not yet decided, but it might be about 3-5 years from now.Go to the Connecting the Corridor webpage to learn more about this Strategic Action Plan and to submit comments.
