On October 9, 2008, a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel editorial supported Mayor Tom Barrett’s proposal to include $1 million in the 2009 city budget for the planning and development of a new Villard Library.

The editorial argued that even though the multi-use project is expensive, the newbuilding which will include “grandfamily housing,” will save the city money in the future, and the building will be a “model for other neighborhoods.”
